Stag Do Brighton: The Honest Guide (2026)
The Lanes, West Street, the seafront and the clubs. The best one-night stag do city for groups from London and the South East.
Brighton is the natural stag do destination for groups coming from London and the South East. Twenty-five minutes on the train from London Bridge, a beach, a proper nightlife scene, and enough going on across the day to fill a weekend without repeating yourself. For groups further north or in the Midlands the costs stack up quickly, but for anyone within an hour of London it is the most convenient European-feeling city break available in the UK.
It is also genuinely more expensive than most UK stag do destinations. A pint costs £5-7 in most city centre bars, hotel prices are high on weekends, and the areas around the seafront particularly at the better-known venues price accordingly. Go in knowing this rather than assuming Brighton will be cheap because it is in the UK.
Why Brighton Works for a Stag Do
Brighton works because it has more character than most UK cities of comparable size. The Lanes, a maze of narrow streets and alleys in the old town filled with independent bars, restaurants, and shops, give the city a texture that purpose-built nightlife strips do not have. The seafront is genuinely impressive. The club scene on West Street and the surrounding area is concentrated and well established. And the city is entirely comfortable with stag and hen groups, which means the group will not feel like an inconvenience anywhere they choose to go.
It also suits groups that want a bit of variety across the weekend rather than two nights on the same strip. The Lanes for the afternoon and early evening, the seafront for a drink with a view, West Street for later on. The city has shape.
Getting There
Brighton station is on the main Southern and Thameslink lines from London. Trains from London Victoria or London Bridge run around £15-25 return booked in advance, journey time about 50-60 minutes. From Gatwick Airport it is about 30 minutes and costs around £10-15.
From further afield the train becomes less compelling. From Birmingham or Manchester it involves a change in London and adds significantly to journey time and cost. For groups coming from the South East, Brighton is an easy train. For groups coming from elsewhere, the cost advantage over a European destination shrinks considerably.
Brighton station is in the city centre and the seafront is a 10 minute walk downhill. Everything is walkable from there.
Where to Stay
Brighton is expensive for accommodation on weekends. Hotels in the city centre and seafront areas run £100-140 per room per night on a weekend in 2026. Booking well in advance makes a significant difference to price.
The seafront hotels have the best location and the highest prices. Hotels a few streets back from the seafront are slightly cheaper and still within easy walking distance of everything. For groups where accommodation cost is a concern, a one-night stay rather than two nights saves significantly and Brighton works well as a one-night trip from London.

The Lanes
The Lanes are the starting point for most Brighton evenings. The network of narrow streets and alleys in the old town has a concentration of independent bars, gastropubs, and restaurants that give the early part of the evening a genuinely good atmosphere. The Cricketers on Black Lion Street is one of the oldest pubs in Brighton and worth a stop. The Hop Poles and The Greys are both reliable options in the Lanes area for a proper pub atmosphere before the evening moves on.
The North Laine area, slightly north of the Lanes, has a more independent and slightly younger bar scene. Good for an afternoon drink or early evening before heading toward the seafront.
The Seafront
The seafront bars come into their own on a summer evening when the city is at its best. The bars along the promenade and around the Palace Pier are busier and more tourist-facing but the setting justifies one or two drinks before moving on.
Brighton Pier itself is worth a walk for the atmosphere and the amusements if the group is in the right mood for it.
West Street and the Clubs
West Street is the main club strip and where Brighton nightlife concentrates later in the evening. It is busy, loud, and straightforward in the way that most UK city centre club strips are. Pryzm is the main large-format club and handles groups well. Patterns on the seafront is a better option for groups that want something with more of a genuine club night feel.
Coalition on the beach below the arches is worth knowing about for groups that want something with an interesting setting. Several bars and clubs operate in the Victorian arches beneath the seafront road and the combination of the setting and the sea views makes for a different kind of evening to West Street.
Activities Worth Doing
Brighton Palace Pier: Free to walk on, amusements and rides available. Worth doing during the day or early evening for the atmosphere. The fish and chips on the pier are a Brighton institution.
The Royal Pavilion: The extraordinarily ornate former royal residence in the centre of Brighton is genuinely unlike any other building in the UK. Worth walking past even if the group does not want to go inside.
Escape rooms: Brighton has several well-reviewed escape rooms in the city centre. Good Saturday morning option.
Crazy golf: Several options near the seafront. Low stakes, competitive, works well for a group in the early afternoon.

How Much Does a Brighton Stag Do Cost?
Based on 2026 prices for a group of 8 on a weekend (Friday to Sunday):
| Item | Total (group of 8) | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Train travel (ex. London, return) | £120-200 | £15-25 |
| Hotel (2 nights, 4 rooms) | £800-1,120 | £100-140 |
| Friday night out (Lanes + seafront) | £400-560 | £50-70 |
| Saturday night out (West Street + clubs) | £480-640 | £60-80 |
| Food (2 days) | £320-480 | £40-60 |
| Activities | £160-240 | £20-30 |
| Total | £2,280-3,240 | £285-405 |
Brighton is the most expensive UK destination on this list after London itself. The accommodation costs are the main driver. For groups coming from London on a one-night trip the total cost drops significantly and Brighton becomes much more competitive.
Brighton Honestly: What to Expect
Brighton delivers a genuinely good stag do weekend for groups that go in with realistic expectations about cost. The city has more character than most UK nightlife destinations, the Lanes give the early evening real texture, and the seafront on a summer night is one of the better settings for a group drinks session anywhere in the UK.
The honest caveat is price. Brighton is expensive and groups that expect UK prices to be automatically cheaper than a European city break will be surprised. A weekend in Krakow costs less than a weekend in Brighton for most UK groups, and delivers more on the nightlife side.
For London and South East groups doing one or two nights, Brighton is the obvious and correct choice. For groups travelling from further away, the numbers need to be looked at honestly before booking.
